n. One who provides technical support to the litigation industry. One having technical understanding of various modes of acquisition, media file management, duplication, editing and presentation. A problem solver with special competency in software and hardware solutions used both inside and outside the litigation arena. A litigation technology consultant.
As sexy as it sounds, it is a bit concerning how we as legal videographers pigeonhole ourselves by not properly defining what we do and who we are. I mean aren’t we really litigation technologists?
The mere shift in terms conjures up a variety of inquisitive reponses in our own minds, let alone those who ask out of kindness, what it is that we do.
“Oh, I’m a Legal Videographer” you respond!
Usually followed by, “So you video depositions.”
Hmmm? As a litigation videographer, I have to wonder whether we should be promoting ourselves and the industry better. I mean, don’t you do more than video record depositions? Sure you do!
Industry Respect
What would happen if we were to call ourselves Litigation Technologists? Would that mean we would take a few steps up that latter of respect? Possibly!
Industry Direction
Is it possible that we would empower ourselves to take hold of our industry to provide the desired direction that we want, or that the industry wants? Wouldn’t it be really cool if we could dictitate the technology we use?
Educational Opportunities
By defining ourselves as litigation technologist, do we not begin to create a career path? Now honestly, don’t you believe a deposition videographer is an entry level position in a very, expansive industry?
Because the growth of a litigation technologist’s career exists through continued education of technology advancements, it goes without saying, learning is a must. New technologies are born every other minute, but those who understand those new technologies is limited when it comes to the litigation industry. Only those that step from behind the viewfinder know where the industry is going.
So the next time you are asked what it is that you do, tell them, “I am a litigation technologist.”
Do not tell the inquisitive that you are a legal videographer. Then see how interested they get.
‘Thanks for asking. I am a litigation technologist. I provide a number of litigation technologies to the litigation industry.”
“Really what’s that all about!” ………………………..
The rest is up to you, Mr./Ms. Litigation Technologist!
